„Each generation improves something in the winemaking process, and just as I did, so did my children. It’s very simple, we have always worked in winemaking, because we love it“
The first small vineyard was planted by great-grandfather Ivan in 1934 in the vicinity of Lašići, a small village near Poreč where the family still lives and produces wine. In addition to viticulture and winemaking, the family was also engaged in the production of field crops at that time, but grandfather Končeto decided to focus exclusively on wine production. His son Eliđo continued production, expanded and modernized the cellar and filled the first bottle of wine in 1994, and today the whole family is involved in the business.
Despite modernization, the goal and guiding thought remained the same; the highest quality production, maximum respect for nature and terroir, and preservation of tradition. By using organic fertilizers and preparations for the protection of vines and grapes, conditions have been created for complete ecological production. In recent years, the Pilato winery has achieved notable successes on the international level as well – in the special Guide for Croatia, Decanter rated Pilato Malvazija sur Lie from 2019 with 96 points, making it the best-rated Istrian white wine along with Kabolina Unica. As part of the winery, there is also a tasting room where visitors can enjoy cold meats and wines and learn all about the production and history of the winery itself.
